There is only one restaurant in this area that I have loved consistently for 26 years: Lia’s Mountain View.
This is authentic Southern Italian food — from a wonderful and authentic Italian family. Established in 1983 by Giuseppe and Antonina Mirto, and their children, Nick, Lia, Maria and Vinnie, who now run the restaurant, Lia’s offers great Italian food in a warm family atmosphere. And it’s been Zagat Rated since 2002!
From our post in November 2011 – This says it all!
As many of you know (if you read our blog) Lia’s will be having a Grand Re-Opening Celebration this Sunday at 2:00 pm. (click for details) The restaurant will officially be fully back in business and taking reservations starting Tuesday, November 22nd.
In July 2010 the restaurant (and the Mirto family) were devastated when a serious fire almost entirely destroyed their restaurant. Since then they have been determined to rebuild their business and their lives — and despite various set-backs along the way, they are finally ready to reopen (with their previous wait staff coming back as well!) Last week we promised you a sneak peek so Auntie M and I dropped by the restaurant to see what’s been going on with their renovation.
The first thing you’ll notice, if you were familiar with the old Lia’s, is the bright new dining room with vaulted ceilings and skylights. Most of the bar area has vaulted ceilings as well. It makes both spaces seem much larger though the footprint of the structure is the same. The wood paneling is gone and has been replaced with walls painted in a soft warm yellow. New large handicap accessible bathrooms are a great upgrade. Lia gave us a quick tour of the kitchen which is much more open now as well.
“We’ve still got a lot to do before Sunday”, Lia told us. She’s been ironing curtains and tablecloths and going through some wonderful family photos — some from Italy and some from here — most of which will be hung on walls in the dining room. This photo is from Lia’s Grand Opening in 1983 — I remembered it!
The rest…you’ll just have to see for yourselves!
When we got back to the store we asked the Barn staff what dish they most missed at Lia’s…everyone had a favorite…some had more than one!! Virginia Strull’s (and my) favorite is Eggplant Parmigiana; Michele McCarthy misses the Liguini Pescatori w/garlic & oil; Mary Orlandi loves the Chicken Marsala (it’s not on the menu but you can get it if you ask); the Broiled Seafood Platter is Jessica Churton’s pick; and Auntie M has been dreaming about the Chicken Vivace. Thankfully, all these popular dishes will be back but Lia also told us they’re going to be introducing some new items. Here are just a few of them:
- Chaseholm Moonlight Chaource Cheese
(panko encrusted & baked, served with toasted focaccia)
- Italian Nachos
- Chicken or Veal Florentine
- Chicken or Veal Francese
- Italian Sampler
(lasagna, eggplant parmigiana, meatball & sausage)
- Tuscan Ribeye Steak
- Flatiron Steak
My mouth was watering just reading the new menu! I’ve already made reservations for Tuesday. Too eager? You bet!
Congratulations to my friends, the Mirto Family. We’ve sure missed you!
