A friend of mine posted a photo of this cocktail on Social Media and it looked so pretty and refreshing I immediately asked for the recipe…and I got it. The original recipe is from the book The New Cocktail Hour by Andre and Tenaya Darlington. I made it (and adapted it a little) and it is absolutely DELICIOUS and refreshing just like I thought it would be.
(makes one cocktail)
2 ounces gin
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
2/3 ounce simple syrup (*make your own*)
Small bunch basil leaves (about 5-10 leaves)
Seltzer/Perrier as long as it’s fizzy (1 to 2 ounces per drink)
Garnish with a lemon slice and a sprig of basil
Muddle basil leaves with lemon juice and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and gin (do NOT add seltzer at this point) and shake. Strain into either a rocks glass or a chilled martini glass. Top with a little fizzy seltzer then garnish with a lemon slice and basil sprig.
*Simple Syrup is just like it sounds….”SIMPLE”. Just heat equal parts water and sugar in a saucepan until sugar dissolves. Don’t boil it! Then cool and refrigerate in a suitable container.
