Here’s a discovery I made on my way home from Belfast. The Lincolnville Motel & Cottages. Located just a mile south of town, this charming motel and its cabins are just adorable. It’s a bit of a drive from New York and the Hudson Valley, but if you’re planning on visiting Maine and want to find a great place to plant yourself, with amazing day trips to the north and south, this is your place!
Owner Alice Amory had a vision and she’s done it in style!! From the Bangor Daily News:
(October 2015) Two and a half years ago, Alice Amory was using tweezers and gold leaf to plate food at a fancy New York City restaurant, the kind of molecular gastronomy eatery that imported boxes of pine needles from Maine to help with the presentation…. After nearly two decades working in the city, the Camden native decided that she was ready to come home. Read the whole article here…
Alice would drive by the for sale sign in front of the “cute” old 1950s motel and cabins on Route 1 (Abbington’s Seaview Motel and Cottages) and finally two years ago, after crunching some numbers, decided to go for it. The shag carpeting and dark paneling from the old days are gone. Now the beams and the walls are pure white with clean simple decorating. Alice’s obvious hard work has paid off. She’s been getting rave reviews from the likes of Frommers, Forbes and Vogue as well as local Maine publications!
Happily, Alice was there when I impulsively stopped to have a look at the motel. Like Alice, when I drove by I just thought those cabins were “cute”! She showed me around the motel herself. I was so impressed with her passion for this project as well as her design skills…she’s got a good eye and excellent taste. She really gets the details (like you’ll see below) and truthfully…I couldn’t find a single thing I’d change!

THERE ARE NO TELEVISIONS OR PHONES in the rooms, but there are record players, records and books. There’s an outdoor swimming pool, charcoal grills, a fire pit, lawn games and a common room with Wifi, coffee and tea, and library. There are decks overlooking the sea.
This is a great place to have a good time, “but it isn’t a polished resort”. It’s a place that let’s you use your own spirit to create an enjoyable and relaxing time away from all those things that interrupt and disrupt your life now…back to a simpler way of life in a beautiful, inspiring spot. And, it is very reasonable!
