What a Difference a Color Consult Makes!

Color Transformation:

We have blogged often about updating paint colors INSIDE your home.  In this consult, however, we were asked to help our client with their home’s exterior color.  I am often amazed at what a difference changing the exterior color can have on a house, and I have to say, the result here is one of the most dramatic I have ever seen.

The house, painted yellow with white trim appeared quite long with an attached garage and two additions off the original structure. The owners wanted to downplay this fact but did not have any real preference as to what direction to take regarding the color. They like gray and were wanting to deepen the overall look of the house color but that was their only input.

My first thought was to unify the house with one color on both the trim and the siding. The variety of window sizes and shapes was distracting to the eye and by painting the whole house the same color, it would make the differences more subtle. Choosing this color was the next step. I wanted to provide the owners with three options in varying degrees of darkness and intensity. I knew I did not want a bluish/gray for the lightest one, fearing it would look like an aircraft carrier.

I chose instead, Rockport Gray from the Benjamin Moore Historic Collection which has subtle green undertones. For the middle color, I selected Iron Mountain, also from Ben Moore which is a lovely dark gray with warm brown undertones. Lastly, Railings, an almost black gray with blue undertones from Farrow and Ball the darkest of the three.

Once the swatches were painted on the house the clients decided to go with the Iron Mountain and I was very happy with the choice.

It connects well with the shingles on the roof and as you can see from the photos, the end result was transformative to say the least. I especially love how the birch tree contrasts with the new house color and really sings in the landscape.

And speaking of landscape…our favorite landscape designer, Christine Krause, is hard at work completing this exterior transformation.  Look for her upcoming blog on her design process.
