It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

I was on my way to work the other morning–it was one of those crystal clear sunny days of early Fall that I just love (I’m sure you all know what I’m talking about) and suddenly, that sweet song the wonderful Fred Rogers started every Mr. Rogers Neighborhood show with came into my head.  “It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor…” and I thought, “Wow, it really IS a beautiful day in my neighborhood and how lucky am I?  What a wonderful way to start the day!” So I decided to take a little side trip on my way to Hammertown to visit a couple of places that always make me really “feel like Fall”…my favorite time of year in the Hudson Valley.  The colors were just fantastic. Everyone seemed happy to be out on this gorgeous morning…so friendly and kind …Fred Rogers would have been pleased.  Of course, I had my trusty iPhone so I just started taking pictures to share with you — my “neighbors”!

First Stop – Beardsley Gardens

This has to be my favorite nursery in the area.  The staff is so knowledgeable and friendly and always offer great advice.  Right now is a good time to visit as they’re having a Fall Sale…which happens to include 20% off trees, shrubs and perennials…and Fall is the time to plant many of them.

Beardsley Gardens is just down the road from my house and I couldn’t help but stop on this sunny day.

Next Stop – Daisi Hill Farm

BEAUTIFUL-DAY-IN-THE

A beautiful day in the neighborhood, indeed!

I really do love this place and Fall is THE time to visit.  It’s a great way to spend a morning or afternoon shopping for plants, gourds, juicy tomatoes and the tastiest sweet corn around.  And, starting in October, Daisi Hill goes into high gear with it’s famous Corn Maze and Pumpkin Cannon, plus hayrides and a petting zoo.  If you have kids (or even if you don’t) you’ll have a blast!

That cat (on the right in the vegetable cart) has the right idea for a day like today…just layin’ in the sun!

So, here’s my advice.  Get out there and enjoy all the wonderful things you can do outdoors during these Hudson Valley early autumn days.  Visit your favorite farmer’s markets and farms or discover a new one; take a hike up Stissing Mountain or around Thompson Pond; visit Olana or Historic Hyde Park; or just lay in the warm sun like that cat! Really, there’s so much to experience where we are so blessed to live–so get out there and (in the words of Nike) just do it!
